I found this post particularly touching. I don't celebrate Lunar New Year, but the last family gathering that I attended was a rather somber occasion: my grandfather's funeral. Nonetheless, it was in the presence of family, and the social dynamic between members were nonetheless present.

Like you, I also found out some things about my family that were initially kept under wraps when I was younger because I couldn't understand then. They're usually kept under wraps because the purity of emotions in a child would not be able to take the conflicting ones experienced when facing the less savoury aspects of our own family. Thankfully, when we're older, it is also the age where we learn that normal is slightly dysfunctional in every family, and that it's okay to be a little left-of-centre at times. The little nuances are there for a very good reason.

Very warm post, Teddy. I love that photo of the Firefly plane too! Must be one of those brand new ATR-72's I've yet to ride on.

And it really sucks to have to cut short your visit home just because of a quiz so early into CNY. I would've thought Singaporean universities' academic calendars would adapt better to the Lunar New Year. :(
