Sorry for taking so long to reply to your comment, Ember! It has been a crazy first week of school (more like having fun lazing around and mentally wandering off during lectures) and I hope you're enjoying the first couple days of the schooling semester.

Thanks for the compliments! I feel compelled to be as detailed as I can be like when I'm explaining it to someone face to face. It's hard to emulate that in words and illustrations but I hope that it's the best of what I can do.

Sadly enough, I have never got the luxury to get myself a copy of Lightroom :P I should try exploring it too. It's rather bigoted on my behalf to assume that everyone uses Photoshop anyway *chuckles*

Ah, the before and after plugin. It was only after Trina's comment that I was determined to get that sucker integrated into my theme - yea, it's a tricky dicky to work with.

Hi Ted,

Thanks very much for your interesting blog. It's always nice to see how people on the other side of the globe live, how they share the same joys and sorrows, what they do in their free time, etc.

I actually have a question about your blog. Would you mind helping us with a linguistic research project? We're compiling data from various Singaporean weblogs. All it requires is checking a few boxes. If you want to take part and/or have more questions, drop me a note ( hack2301@uni-trier.de RE: Question ) so that I can then send you the 'official' project eMail. We'd really appreciate your help.

Thanks very much in advance!
Best regards,
- Fran

PS: Thanks for the tutorial! I've always been wondering about the differences between grayscaling and desaturation. Now I know. Thanks!

Interesting tutorial. I'm with the rest of us who didn't know about the difference between desaturation and grayscaling. I agree with Latrina that your tutorials are awesome, really in-depth stuff. Not to mention how you well you illustrate the examples as we go along!

It seems I've been using the channel mixer method all this awhile, only that its the one in Lightroom which its called Grayscale Mix(er). Maybe you could include a small mention about it for Lightroom users too, haha. =D

Btw, I'm loving your implementation of the jQuery before/after plugin! I was just seeing a tutorial of it at Catch My Fame awhile ago and you're already using it. Nice! =)

Thank you! I don't use the channel mixer all the time too - for lazy people like me I'd stick to adding a black and white adjustment layer, do some half-hearted tweaks and get the photo done with. I know that's bad!

What actions are you using? Are they custom made or downloaded elsewhere?

@Ivy: Hey, at least you didn't use desaturation for years like me :P teehee! And yea, I discovered the power of channel mixer recently too! Gosh!

@Eli: You're not alone - I was stuck with desaturation since I started photography, because my logic dictates that since increasing the saturation did make colours pop then desaturation should make a good black and white photo. I was wrong :P

@Julia: Thanks for the compliments! I am not quite into black and white photography, simply because I think my photos aren't shot with B&W conversion in mind, hehe. At most, I convert my infrared photos into B&W, while I keep the colours on the normal colour photos that I take *weak smiles*

@NoktahHitam: Oh... what's the difference between monochrome and grayscale?

@issac: Hmm, not really - photography is simply my personal pursuit, that's all :)

Oh, no worries Trina. You're not alone too! I couldn't tell the difference myself too, after reading your comment. It only becomes obvious when you toggle between two versions of the image quickly (e.g. going back and forth between images). I've taken the liberty to include a comparison photo for each example, you can drag the blue slider to the left or right to show the difference between the two images. I hope that helps!

I used to play with saturation sliders only too - until I discovered the grayscale option under the Image > Mode menu. It has always been there but I didn't pay much attention to it, expecting it to give the same results as simple desaturation.

Thanks for the compliments, Trina! Happy new year to you yea :) It's my pleasure to write tutorials and share my knowledge/discovery with others too.

Same here. I didn't know there is a distinction between desaturation and grayscaling until I started reading up more on black and white conversion using Photoshop. In the past I simply desaturate my photos since it has a keyboard shortcut in Photoshop by default, while grayscaling didn't have the privilege to have one, hah!

I love partial grayscaling too! My method is slightly different when CS4 came out - since then we can create adjustment layers (instead of making direct modifications to a layer), so I simply adjust the opacity of the adjustment layer for the desired partial grayscaling effect.

Hint: Try different blending options for the adjustment layers and you'll discover interesting effects!
