Episode 03 – The Phone that doesn’t Ring (鳴らない、電話)
Training time
Evangelion units have around 5 minutes of battery power after being unplugged from the umbilical cable. When the cable is damaged, the same thing happens. As the Evangelion switches to battery power, the timer will flash across the screen in the command center.
Unlike in the anime, Shinji is seen training inside another alive but incomplete Evangelion unit. In the anime, he was training using his own Unit 01. A helluva details are added to the miniscreens located above and below the huge glass panel in the remake.
Maya and Ritsuko are in a conversation centered around Shinji’s character. The viewer learns that Shinji only accepts the commands of others give him without much care or evaluation, making him a living puppet. Shinji sees no purpose in piloting Eva except for the confirmation from his dad.
Shinji going to school
Instead of the open-air garbage disposal area, they’ve made it cleaner by using covered containers in the remake, hah!
Shinji is seen as a lonesome person, walking to school alone while others usually travel to school in groups. In the remake, they’re redrawn the entire scene, adding traffic, more pedestrians and escalators in.
The scene further highlights the loneliness and isolation that surrounds Shinji. Ritsuko and Misato are on a phone conversation and their chat about Shinji can be heard throughout the scene.
Rei is seen sitting beside the window, staring out of the window. Looks like Shinji is not the only lonely person. In the remake, they have painted sceneries outside the window instead of just filling it with bright white light. Another difference in this scene is where the strap is tucked underneath Rei’s uniform collar in the remake, instead of simply over the collar in the original anime.
Sorry, transfer student
The cinematic effect added in the remake is obvious, when you compared it to the remake. Bluer skies and a dynamic range that approaches to what you see in a real scene.
Toji beats Shinji up for his inexperience in piloting Eva which resulted in his sister’s injuries. Note the consistency in the design of the window panes of the buildings as compared to the lack of in the original anime.
Shinji struggles to get up after being thrown to the ground by a powerful punch from Toji. He did not defend himself from his attack, indicating his introvert personality and his unwillingness to do anything that concerns himself.
Shinji mutters that it wasn’t what he wanted for piloting Eva. Toji hears that and he heads back to Shinji, pulling him up by his collar and punching him for another time.
Shinji falls to the ground again. In the remake, it is revealed that Rei was silently watching the entire commotion from the classroom window.
Shinji lies on the balcony (on the ground in the original anime) and looks at the sky. He is seen listening to his SDAT player in the movie. Rei informs Shinji about another angel attack and then leaves. Shinji sits up and looks at Rei as she leaves.
Fourth angel approahces Tokyo-3
The Fourth Angel (Fifth in the movie) looks significantly different between the anime and the remake. The new design includes twitching arms and protruding shoulder blades on the new angel.

Screws unlocking and rising from the ground as the Tokyo-3 skyscrapers were being brought into the GeoFront. Significant changes to the dynamic lighting effect is extremely evident – as you can see, huge surface area of the lock bolts have been shadowed (although this reduces the contrast, it’s more realistic). A very subtle change is that the speed limit sign and the no waiting sign has swapped positions :) And the stop light is finally red and not yellow.
This time they’ve added a wire gauze between the street and the lock bolts. Maybe because they don’t wnat people falling inside? Note that the colour of the car is changed to white in the remake.

In the anime, skyscrapers seemed to be arranged in a haphazard way – but in the remake, it’s neater and more realistic.
When the retraction of skyscrapers is complete, we cut to the scene of people inside Geo-Shelter 344, which includes Toji, Kensuke and their classmates.
Kensuke is miffed by the strict control of information through the media by the government during the battle, and shows Toji the screen depicting flower in the wild (which is a great deception on what is really going out outside). Toji doesn’t seem to care a lot about the details.
The JSSDF is using lots of conventional firearms in an attempt to neutralize the angel’s AT field and to defeat it (which is impossible). This scene shows how military influence and presence have been assimilitaed into the daily lives of other Tokyo-3 residents, with civilian houses in the foreground.
The Fourth angel doesn’t seem to be bothered by the firearms, since it is shielded from them by its AT field. In this scene, it emerges behind a hill in the remake and is simply seen crossing the sky in the anime.
After suffering a humiliating defeat by the Third Angel, Shinji is reluctant and angry about being asked to pilot Eva to battle the angel. He seems less aggressive (and sadder) in the anime, and his facial features are not consistent in the anime. In the remake, he seems to be more aggressive and reluctant.

The battle begins
The Fourth angel stands upright after landing at Tokyo-3. For some reason, the arms in the original anime is missing (although visible in the opening sequence). In the remake, the legs underneath the belly of the angel continues to twitch and it is seen with arm-like projections.
Toji (at Kensuke’s pleading) and Kensuke sneak out of the Geo-Shelter to witness the epic battle between an angel and an Eva unit. Kensuke is recording the entire battle using his camcorder (which looks a lot better in the remake).
The elevator used to shuttle the Eva unit from Geofront – it’s now crowded with buildings around it and the camera is pulled further away from it in the remake.
Eva 01 emerges from the elevator in the blistering heat. Note the significant changes in the geometry of the head – in the remake, Eva has a more slender head and it’s more elongated than in the anime.
Reciting the instructions he was given during training, Shinji fires away madly at the angel.
Indiscriminate firing at the target creates a huge smoke screen between him and the angel, and Shinji is seen grimacing as he fires his rifle. Back in the Command Center, Misato mumbles, calling Shinji stupid. Shinji then ran out of bullets and starts to pant, when a sudden attack from the angel surprised him.
Shinji manages to escape the attack just in time, with the glowing whips from the angel pulverizing a building beside him.
A new gun is sent up for Shinji’s use but he was too shocked to move. In the remake, we can see the scene outside the Eva (images from various cameras around Eva is projected onto the screen in front of Shinji, giving him a rather wide angle view that is normally not possible according to the anatomy of Eva).
Fourth angel stands over the fallen Eva, with Shinji shaking in fear. It is seen in the still that the core of the angel in the anime is visible but it’s hidden in the remake. It attackes Eva Unit 01, but Shinji manages to escape again.
Eva Unit 01 falls backwards against another building, while the angel pulverizes another building after missing it. The building houses the connection of Eva’s umbilical cord.
The 5-minute countdown begins with the angel destroying the connection, causing the plug to fall off (it is an intentional design for the plug to fall off after power is lost, so that it doesn’t interfere with the movements of Eva). Note the incorporation of the Web2.0 style in the countdown times – awesome! Emergency messages immediately fills the entire screen.
The angel lifts Eva Unit 01 with its whips and throws it against a hill where Kensuke and Toji conveniently chose to stand. Shinji feels the pain after the hurl, but he rises from his seat, only to realise that Kensuke and Toji were nearly hurt by Eva’s hands.
Kensuke and Toji narrowly miss death when the angel threw Eva against a hill on which they were observing the battle. They are shaking in fear when Shinji was overwhelmed with confusion – whether he should save the people who beat him up for piloting an Eva or he should save them from the angel. Their presence also stops him from battling the Eva.
Misato and Ritsuko receive information from the database which reveals to them that Kensuke and Toji are Shinji’s classmates. They were surprised by their presence as they should be in the Geo-Shelter instead of appearing on the groud. Misato commands them to enter Eva in order to stay safe.
Fourth Angel approaches Eva. The cinematic effect added in the remake reveals more details of the hills in the background and the sky. The colours appear to be more saturated as well. Shinji grabs the angel’s whips and hurled it back to Tokyo-3.
Eva Unit 01 rises from the hill and the scene closes up on the burned hands of the Eva. The heat from the whips melted the armours on the fingers. Misato is heard commanding Shinji to retreat and Toji pleads him to do so, while Kensuke mounrs over the damange done to his camcorder by LCL. Shinji decides to defy Misato’s orders and battle the angel.
Shinji whips out the progressive knife with the scalded hand, and the camera closes up on the hand. The background in the remake is more detailed, although details were lacking in the damanged hand in the wider shot in the remake. The skin colour of Eva is also different.
Shinji enters a state of fit rage as he rushes down from the hill to engage the angel. Misato mutters to herself, disappointed and angered by his decision to defy her orders. Suddenly Eva Unit 01 comes to an abrupt stop.
It is revealed that Eva Unit 01 was impaled by the angel’s whips. Still in a fit rage, Shinji squirms but ignores the pain in his abdomen and stabs the angel’s core with his progressive knife and sparks start to fly out of the stab wound on the core. Despite the pain, Shinji holds his position while Kensuke and Toji watch in fear. Maya does a countdown before the battery runs out (which is rather redundant because the remaining battery life can be seen on screen) – the situation becomes grim as if Shinji fails to kill the angel before the battery dies, the angel could kill him and his classmates inside and then proceed to invade the Geofront. Misato watches with all seriousness when sparks shower Eva Unit 01.
We then cut to a scene where the camera is located further away from the battle.
The end of the countdown. Seconds before Eva losses power, the core of the angel grows into something like a mass of meat and then explodes like a blood ballon. Shinji collapses and weeps on his controls, exhausted from the exersion and pain. This is when Kensuke and Toji understand how hard is it to pilot an Eva and the emotional cost to the pilot, making Toji feeling regretful about how he treated Shinji.
As night falls, we can see the remains of the angel (the whips, as the rest exploded into blood) silhouetted against the darkness and a rainbow from the blood bath. In the anime, angels do not explode and their carcass were rather better preserved.
It is One of my favourites which include Naruto too … Watch it 3 years ago … “The new edition”
The only regret is cannot really get the ending of the anime, even after watching it twice … “Haha …”

Beautiful changes. They’ve 2000-ified an ancient anime! The drawings are definitely better though I don’t like the green accent on the 01. It makes it look like a cheap toy from a vending machine. I also don’t like the change in Lilith’s mask. I mean, isn’t her mask the logo of the organization?! It takes away from the meaning of the logo then! -__-;;
I’ve watched NGE so many time I think I’ll skip on the rebuilt versions. Maybe I’ll watch the final movie if there will be changes in the ending. :)

@Eric: Yay! I actually enjoyed the Naruto anime too, but the filler episodes bored me because the anime was catching up with the manga’s publishing. It just puzzles me that why so many animes have to get progressively darker… like how Sasuke turned to Orochimaru for power, and how the storyline starts to wrap around psychological hardships of the Evangelion pilots. The ‘new edition’ that you’re mentioned – are you referring to the director’s cut? They’ve included a lot of bonus scenes from Episode 21 to 24 for the director’s cut. Oh and for the ending of NGE, do you mean the original Episodes 25 and 26 or the later version of the film (Evangelion: Death and Rebirth)? The old one is very confusing (and disappointing as well)… the later version suits the context of the anime better :) I am yet to watch Gundam, but I heard it’s awesome!
@Han: Cardcaptor Sakura! One of the greatest animes around, but sadly I couldn’t find a friend who has it (so I can get from them instead of using my crappy Internet connection to download it). I’ve watched Sailormoon when I was a kid, but mom banned me from it later because she thought that it’ll make me… girlish / unmasculine. Whatever :roll:

For now, we don’t have to settle for odd shapes of the characters’ faces finally (the body shape and facial structures of the characters change subtly among different episodes). Yea I don’t quite get the reason why they’ve traded the good ol’ purple for a helluva neon green on Unit01! And the neon green makes Unit01 glow in the dark, which makes it a better target for the Angels, heh. For the same thing, I’m appalled by the change in Lilith’s mask. I heard that they’ve now used that design for SEELE’s new logo instead. Have you seen the new NERV logo? It’s the same old one but have an inverted apple in the background. Rebuild of Evangelion 4.0 is speculated to have an alternate ending (or a continuity to the last two episodes of the anime)… now I’m looking forward to that!

My brother used to be into NGE. He was more of the anime person out of the both of us! However, I have sat down and watched some eps with him and.. well, I still am not an anime person, but I am not the person who disses those who are.

@Id: Yea Lilith does look a little freaky, but it’ll be freakier in the original anime episode because it has seven eyes (that got me stunned a little when I first saw Lilith). I didn’t watch any animes besides Naruto (and stopped when they started releasing the filler episodes – I find them a little boring) before being introduced to NGE by my ex-roommate. He was watching halfway through the series when I knew about it, so after that I rewatched the entire thing 3 times :) but that doesn’t make me an otaku! Haha. I don’t go great lenghts to participate in cosplay events or stock up huge amounts of NGE memorabilia. Anyway for the WP2.5 thing, you’re welcome! The new features are really exciting, although a little inconvenient to new WP users because the old admin layout is almost completely scrapped.
@lix: Yes! It has larger lenses this time, and has a more metallic feeling to it. In the original anime, his camera looks like, no offence, a piece of cheap plastic :razz: lol!

I most definitely agree… it was such a huge hit because of the psychological state of each child’s sufferings. Though I am disappointed the Rebuild doesn’t have Asuka, as she doesn’t come in until many episodes afterwards anyhow. Thanks for sharing this!

@Eric: Same here! I didn’t have the NGE DVD with me, so I borrowed it from a friend (and ripped it into my harddisk, in case I needed it later). Since I had the Director’s Cut version, I’m not intending to purchase a collector’s copy for the original anime, but I would love to wait for all the 4 promised Rebuild of Evangelion films to be released, purchase the whole DVD set :) heh.
@Destiny: Same here! I only got to know about it a month ago when I was searching Youtube for NGE when a whole list of new trailers came out. But I spent another month finding where to download the movie! The one I’ve downloaded is a camera rip from a Japan cinema with no subtitles. But since I’ve watched the original anime version, I know more or less what they’re talking about :) teehee. The first film doesn’t have Asuke because she only appears after Episode 8 (?) and the first film only covers the first six episodes of the anime. I love Asuka because she’s very noisy and brings some life into the anime :D
wow, those changes are awesome. and I never watched this anime. I watched Naruto for like 2 years but I stopped because I had my SPM examinations. I wish I could start watching Naruto back! isk..isk..isk…

@Aisyah: Yep! They’ve redrawn everything, which justifies the need for a remake. I’ve watched Naruto for 2+ years too, but gave up along the way as I got busier towards the end of my college studies. Now I’m so out of touch with Naruto, I couldn’t muster enough interest to continue. How sad :sad:

Hey there! These comparison shots are fantastic. I’ve heard a lot about the making of this, and it’s actually not just a remake, though they’re trying hard not to make that sound like a sequel either, hence ‘Rebuild’.
The changes that are beyond cosmetic are likely very intentional, given the chalk-outline opening scene. Making the water red in pretty much all scenes, for example, and moving Lilith’s mask from her to the Seele monoliths. Also strange things I don’t get, like the track number and time change of Shinji’s music player. Only the seconds remain the same number. When everything is so faithfully re-rendered, a change like this is suspicious.
While I don’t know because I haven’t seen the rest, could this be the result of Shinji’s wish…? A chance to try again? It’s my speculations :p
Thanks for the compliments, Chris! Actually I’m not done with the comparison yet (I’m stuck around episode 3 or something), I couldn’t find the time to crop the screenshots and composite them into images and then upload them.
Many people got this impression that Gainax is just treating the Evangelion series as an awesome cash cow, since the Rebuild, with largely similar storyline for the first installment of the 4-film series (as compared to the original anime), had earned them considerable amount of money.
Cosmetic changes aside, there are indeed several aspects of the new storyline that might signify a change in how things turn out for the next few films – like how they’ve axed a few angels out of the series, the puzzling change of Lilith’s face, the change in the SEELE and NERV logos and etc. Indeed, it’s suspicious when the animators took great pain to faithfully recreate many of the insignificant minute details (like the passengers on the train, the clutter on Misato’s apartment).
I can’t help but speculate too!

Great side-by-side comparison- but this could have done with some discussion of vitally important scenes in the original that *weren’t* in Rebuild, perhaps most interestingly the failure of EVA-01 to reach out by itself and deflect the falling beams from hitting Shinji.
Thanks for the compliments! My review is more on the aesthetic and visual aspect of the remake, and less on the technicalities. I’m not an Eva expert too so I guess it shouldn’t weigh on the storyline changes, but I’m excited to see how the next few films play out differently from the animated series :)
This was a pretty awesome series it reminded me of Gundam Wing. I miss old shows like this on toonami and adult swim.
