Episode 02 – Unfamiliar Ceiling (見知らぬ、天井)
Shinji in Unit 01

This scene depicts Shinji in Unit 01′ plug for the very first time. He is initially calm but grew increasingly nervous prior to the battle.

Misato shouted ‘Lift off!‘, marking the start of the catastrophic and epic battle between an angel and an Evangelion unit for the first time since The Thrid Impact.
Above ground in Tokyo 3

Evangelion Unit 01 appears above the streets of Tokyo 3 after being transported through the launch mechanism. Note that in Rebuild, the neon green colour on the armour of Unit 01 are glowing in the dark – how cool is that!

Shinji was instructed to make his first move, and he manages to do it with a fairly high synchronisation ratio for a first-time pilot. The Nerv staff gasped in awe as they see Unit 01 going mobile for the first time in a real battle.
The battle began

Third Angel Sachiel gets aggressive with Unit 01, ripping its left arm apart and breaking it. The lighting effects are significantly improved in Rebuild, although that means sacrificing a lot of details in the darker shadows.

Shinji became psychologically tortured as Unit 01′s forearm was broken – although no physical damage is done, the synchronisation ratio between Shinji and Unit 01 enabled him to feel pain and gave him an impression that his forearm was broken as well.

Eventually Sachiel got advantage over Unit 01 during the battle, grabbing Unit 01 by the head and by using it’s powerful light saber, punctured the armour over the left eye of Unit 01. This triggered the berserk mode in Unit 01, which was somewhat intentional as according to Gendo’s plan. In the remake, the nerve connections were rendered in 3D while in the original anime, they were just simply drawn and then animated.
The unfamiliar ceiling

Shinji wakes up in the hospital as the battle scene ends, and finds himself sweating profusely. He stares at the ceiling, commenting that it is unfamiliar to him, just as how the ceiling in Misato’s apartment is. The lighting effect is notably improved in the remake.
The aftermath

In the remake, the aftermath is depicted as a huge blood bath because the angels typically ‘pop like blood balloons’ as they die from the battle. In the original anime, what is shown was a rather simplistic crater as a result of the explosion.
Gendo’s meeting with Seele members

There is a significant difference in this scene between the original and the remake. The colour-coded meeting desks in the original anime gave way to a more serious looking monoliths in the remake. In addition, the remake also complicated the design on the monoliths, which was rather simple in the original name.
In the hospital

It is shown that instead of merely staring into space when Rei first met Shinji at the Unit 01 storage garage, Rei is looking at Shinji as she was wheeled past him in the hospital corridor.

It is observed that the strong blue/cyan hue in the original anime was removed, and replaced by a slightly purple/magneta-shifted hue in the remake. The glowing light at the end of the corridor seems to be missing in the remake, perhaps an effort to make the scene simpler.
The cleaning up operation

Misato and Ritsuko inspects the damage done to Tokyo 3 after the battle between Unit 01 and Sachiel. They were seen inspecting ground zero in the hovercraft. Maya was seen in the cabin with them as well. In contrast, they were working hands-on in the original anime, and later in the truck Misato loudly claims that the air conditioner is the best invention of mankind. In the original anime, Maya was nowhere to be seen.
Confused Shinji

Confused Shinji stares at the forearm of which he thought was snapped during the battle. Later, Misato approaches Shinji in the hospital.

Misato accompanies Shinji to get the address of his new residence. She requests that Shinji lives with her after knowing that he will be living alone – she was worried that he could not take care of himself. Misato later calls Ritsuko to tell her about the change in plan and jokes that she will not flirt with Shinji, provoking Ritsuko to scream at her over the phone.
Shinji, this is your city, your home

Misato brings Shinji to grocery shopping so that she can celebrate her new flatmate, Shinji. She was seen purchasing a lot of instant, microwaveable food, filling their trolley up to the brim. Note how they have painstakingly recreated every single food item in the cart in the remake. Wow!
Shinji hears the conversation between two housewives about the battle the night before, and feels incompetent because they expressed their doubts over Nerv’s and the pilot’s ability to defend Tokyo 3 from angel attacks.

Misato brings Shinji to a lookout point on a hill near Tokyo 3, and they witness how skyscrapers in Tokyo 3 rises from the Geofront when there is no angel attack. Shinji’s breath was taken away by the view of Tokyo 3 while Misato tells Shinji that this is the city that he will be protecting with his Evangelion.

Misato brings Shinji to her flat, his new home. Shinji is a little shy at first and apologises for disturbing Misato, and she immediately corrects him and tells him that this is going to be his home. Shinji blushes and steps into the apartment saying ‘tadaima‘ (I’m home in Japanese).

The clutter in Misato’s apartment is immediately apparent as Shinji looks around the living area. He is surprised that while Misato appears to be neat, commanding and responsible in the Nerv headquaters, her apartment is actually in a very big mess, giving us an insight of Misato’s true personality.

Misato is a well-known beer-guzzler who cannot live with her beer. She drinks beer during every single meal, regardless of her mood. As expected, her refrigerator is fully stocked with nothing else but beer cans only.

The two scenes above again tells us how detailed the remake is – from every single time scattered on the bedroom floor to the fridge on which the microwave sits on.

It’s impressive that how they have recreated the entire scene with all the details intact in the remake. The food looks tastier in the remake!

Misato and Shinji dine after cooking everything in the microwave oven. Shinji doesn’t seem to be comfortable with Misato’s rather unhealthy choice of food while she chides him for being too picky.

Shinji stumbles into PenPen, Misato’s pet penguin in the bathroom and runs out of the shower screaming (and naked). Misato acts if she doesn’t notice he is naked and calmly introduces him to her pet. As Misato removes the beer bottle obscuring the groin on Shinji, a tooth-pick holder behind the beer can barely covers the area.

PenPen takes a glance at Shinji and ignores him, showing that PenPen does not only have a certain level of intelligence but also some advanced emotions and expressions.

Shinji enters the bath and thinks that Misato is a nice person. He evaluates his motive of driving the Evangelion machine and his relationship with his father. I cannot figure out why they’ve changed the bath water to red from the blue in the original anime – perhaps it’s for the lighting?
Back in the Nerv headquarter

This is the first time the viewer sees the inactivation plug, a plug that stops all signals from the Evangelion brain to the rest of the body to completely eliminate the risk of it going berserk. The plug was inserted after Unit 00 went berserk in a activation test, where Unit 00 smashed the glass panels separating the chamber and the control center.

Gendo and Ritsuko are seen in a conversation, talking about Rei and her recovery after the failed activation test.
In Misato’s apartment

The SDAT player becomes Shinji’s sole heaven for seeking solace throughout the series. The SDAT player is something like a modern potable music player but it seems that in 2015 they are still using magnetic tapes *gasp* what happened to SSD?

While in the bathtub, Misato murmurs that although she should feel happy that she had defeated the Third Angel (somewhat a revenge to what Adam did to her father in the botched contact experience years ago), she doesn’t feel so in fact.

Shinji stares at the ceiling in his bedroom – the unfamiliar ceiling is a recurring theme throughout the series, especially during flashbacks.

Camera zooms in on the eye of which Evangleion Unit 01 was impaled during the battle with Sachiel. Flashback occurs as the sounds of the battle can be heard.
Flasback – Battle with Sachiel

After the light saber punctured Unit 01′s right eye, blood splattered out. The effect of having a bright background (although theoretically non-existant in the actual battle scene) emphasizes the grave situation of the unit.

Emergency message pops up across the screens in the Command Center. The word ‘Emergency’ is placed in hexagonal grids, also a recurring theme in the show – the doors in the Nerv headquaters are all hexagonal in shape, as well as the honeycomb structure in the Terminal Dogma (only shown in the original anime though).

Evangelion Unit 01 went into berserk mode after suffering rather major damages caused by the light saber impaling its eyes and skull.

Sachiel opened up its AT field to stop Unit 01 from attacking it. Note that the AT field is octagonal in shape.

In order to erode the AT field of Sachiel, Unit 01 regenerates its broken left forearm, to the surprise of the Nerv officers. The regeneration process is slightly different in the original and in the remake – for the former, it regenerates with a flash of light while in the remake, a bulk of meaty mass appears instead.

Unit 01 trying to break the AT field by forcefully prying it open at the center. This is also known as neutralising the AT field, which is usually done by normal weapons if the field is weak enough. This scene reminds me of something goatse which I’m not going to elabourate on  Note that there seems to be a rainbow-like hue on the AT field in the remake.

To the greater surprise of everyone, Unit 01 is successful in completely neutralising Sachiel’s AT field by physically tearing it into half.

Seeing that it’s last barrier of defence was broken down, Sachiel defends itself by blasting Unit 01 with a powerful light ray. The ray is shown to attain the shape of a crucifix, a hint of the underlying Christianity undertones of the anime.

Unit 01 was knocked back by the strong blast but it didn’t seem to attain any damages at all.

As an act of revenge, Unit 01 snaps both forearms of Sachiel. In the original anime, the angels have blue blood but in the remake, angels have red blood instead.

Sachiel kicks Unit 01 in the stomach after its forearms were broken. Unit 01 charges back at Sachiel again, and in a fit of anger, it tries to rip the ribcage-like structure to expose the core. After the core is exposed and vulnerable, it started to stab the core with the bone fragments instead of using its equipped progressive knife, speaking volume of the irrationality of the unit when it is berserk.

Knowing it’s impending defeat, Sachiel screams and wraps itself around the torso and head of Unit 01. This is followed by Sachiel initiating a self-destruction mechanism in a desperate and final attempt to destroy Unit 01, whereby it explodes with great intensity and power, alongside a generous bloodbath.

A huge crucifix and a rainbow are seen in the sky. The rainbow is seen due to the amount of blood splattering after the explosion under moonlight. In the original anime, the crucifix is white and there is no rainbow formed since angels do not die in a blood explosion, but rather, simply involving the vapourisation of its body mass.

Unit 01 unharmed by the explosion, walking out of the flames of the explosion. This stunned the Nerv officers and Ritusko questions herself is that the monster she had created.

It is One of my favourites which include Naruto too … Watch it 3 years ago … “The new edition”
The only regret is cannot really get the ending of the anime, even after watching it twice … “Haha …”
Really hope can watch it again …
U ever watch Gundam Series ?
Check out Eric’s last blog post: Gundam 00
I never really got into evangelion – I was more into sakura wars – and even gundam wing to a certain extent!
I’m gettin gback into my anime atm though – watching cardcaptor sakura and sailor moon atm! vintage stuff! :P

Beautiful changes. They’ve 2000-ified an ancient anime! The drawings are definitely better though I don’t like the green accent on the 01. It makes it look like a cheap toy from a vending machine. I also don’t like the change in Lilith’s mask. I mean, isn’t her mask the logo of the organization?! It takes away from the meaning of the logo then! -__-;;
I’ve watched NGE so many time I think I’ll skip on the rebuilt versions. Maybe I’ll watch the final movie if there will be changes in the ending. :)
Check out Ivy’s last blog post: Tea of the Mist
@Eric: Yay! I actually enjoyed the Naruto anime too, but the filler episodes bored me because the anime was catching up with the manga’s publishing. It just puzzles me that why so many animes have to get progressively darker… like how Sasuke turned to Orochimaru for power, and how the storyline starts to wrap around psychological hardships of the Evangelion pilots. The ‘new edition’ that you’re mentioned – are you referring to the director’s cut? They’ve included a lot of bonus scenes from Episode 21 to 24 for the director’s cut. Oh and for the ending of NGE, do you mean the original Episodes 25 and 26 or the later version of the film (Evangelion: Death and Rebirth)? The old one is very confusing (and disappointing as well)… the later version suits the context of the anime better :) I am yet to watch Gundam, but I heard it’s awesome!
@Han: Cardcaptor Sakura! One of the greatest animes around, but sadly I couldn’t find a friend who has it (so I can get from them instead of using my crappy Internet connection to download it). I’ve watched Sailormoon when I was a kid, but mom banned me from it later because she thought that it’ll make me… girlish / unmasculine. Whatever
@Ivy: “They’ve 2000-ified an ancient anime!” – Well said! They’ve redrawn the scenes and make them even better. For now, we don’t have to settle for odd shapes of the characters’ faces finally (the body shape and facial structures of the characters change subtly among different episodes). Yea I don’t quite get the reason why they’ve traded the good ol’ purple for a helluva neon green on Unit01! And the neon green makes Unit01 glow in the dark, which makes it a better target for the Angels, heh. For the same thing, I’m appalled by the change in Lilith’s mask. I heard that they’ve now used that design for SEELE’s new logo instead. Have you seen the new NERV logo? It’s the same old one but have an inverted apple in the background. Rebuild of Evangelion 4.0 is speculated to have an alternate ending (or a continuity to the last two episodes of the anime)… now I’m looking forward to that!
Wow, Lilith looks freaky! Note to self: Do not look at eerie things after having two days of nightmares. =P
My brother used to be into NGE. He was more of the anime person out of the both of us! However, I have sat down and watched some eps with him and.. well, I still am not an anime person, but I am not the person who disses those who are.
Btw, I just upgraded to WP 2.5. Delayed I know, but the links that you sent to me via email helped! I am still getting used to the new features and the changes, but I think I can manage. Thanks again!
Check out Id’s last blog post: Afterwards, We Had Coffee.
the camera in the Toji and Kensuke screen shot also looks more modern! spot the differences game
Check out lix’s last blog post: the final straw
@Id: Yea Lilith does look a little freaky, but it’ll be freakier in the original anime episode because it has seven eyes (that got me stunned a little when I first saw Lilith). I didn’t watch any animes besides Naruto (and stopped when they started releasing the filler episodes – I find them a little boring) before being introduced to NGE by my ex-roommate. He was watching halfway through the series when I knew about it, so after that I rewatched the entire thing 3 times :) but that doesn’t make me an otaku! Haha. I don’t go great lenghts to participate in cosplay events or stock up huge amounts of NGE memorabilia. Anyway for the WP2.5 thing, you’re welcome! The new features are really exciting, although a little inconvenient to new WP users because the old admin layout is almost completely scrapped.
@lix: Yes! It has larger lenses this time, and has a more metallic feeling to it. In the original anime, his camera looks like, no offence, a piece of cheap plastic  lol!
Haha … Me watching long time ago which borrow from a friend …
I think should be the latest one … About the detail … Sorry I really forgotten.
I am plan to get myself a copy of the whole set later but not so soon … May be next year …
The Gundam series, the latest one is “00″ … Just finish watching it last few weeks which consist 25 episodes for the part 1 … Part 2 will only start in end of this year …
Totally recommended …!

I never knew that NGE had a remake of it!! I gotta go and download it now too!
I most definitely agree… it was such a huge hit because of the psychological state of each child’s sufferings. Though I am disappointed the Rebuild doesn’t have Asuka, as she doesn’t come in until many episodes afterwards anyhow. Thanks for sharing this!
Check out Destiny’s last blog post: Planter of Death
@Eric: Same here! I didn’t have the NGE DVD with me, so I borrowed it from a friend (and ripped it into my harddisk, in case I needed it later). Since I had the Director’s Cut version, I’m not intending to purchase a collector’s copy for the original anime, but I would love to wait for all the 4 promised Rebuild of Evangelion films to be released, purchase the whole DVD set :) heh.
@Destiny: Same here! I only got to know about it a month ago when I was searching Youtube for NGE when a whole list of new trailers came out. But I spent another month finding where to download the movie! The one I’ve downloaded is a camera rip from a Japan cinema with no subtitles. But since I’ve watched the original anime version, I know more or less what they’re talking about :) teehee. The first film doesn’t have Asuke because she only appears after Episode 8 (?) and the first film only covers the first six episodes of the anime. I love Asuka because she’s very noisy and brings some life into the anime :D
wow, those changes are awesome. and I never watched this anime. I watched Naruto for like 2 years but I stopped because I had my SPM examinations. I wish I could start watching Naruto back! isk..isk..isk…
Check out Aisyah’s last blog post: New Theme – My Scrapbook
@Aisyah: Yep! They’ve redrawn everything, which justifies the need for a remake. I’ve watched Naruto for 2+ years too, but gave up along the way as I got busier towards the end of my college studies. Now I’m so out of touch with Naruto, I couldn’t muster enough interest to continue. How sad
hey teddy
i am also an eva-lover!
though i haven’t watched the movie yet
i’ll have to when summer comes around!
Check out tina’s last blog post: first post! :)
@tina: High-five!!! teehee. The film is relatively new, and I think there’s no reputable subtitle release yet (for non-Japanese-speaking audience). You’ll have to wait a little now, but I think it’ll be done by summer!
[...] Hikaru (宇多田 ヒカル), before I start writing. It is also the official song for the film Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0, in case you’re wondering. I love the song because despite of the cheerful title, the lyrics [...]
it the 6th angel as Nerv started with 3 in their pocket and not 2 in the new story. i guess they are pumping up the “infighting” abit more… we should be getting more backstory on this version.
Where can i download the Rebuild Of Evangelion:Destruction(Episode 2)???????????????????????????????????please help me!!
As far as I know, it’s not out yet.
But i have a 2nd rebuild movie right? If the movie is out please do tell me…..i am the evanglion hardfans………k thanx 4 d information………
I’m sorry what i mean is IT MUST HAVE THE SECOND MOVIE OUT right?thanx… :???:
Very nice comparison, thanks! I noticed two places where the image addresses are incorrect (they link to the images right above them):
episode one — Sachiel’s leap
episode two — Gendo’s meeting with Seele members
The images are there, they’re just not linked correctly.
@virtus: Thanks for informing me of the problem. I’ve rectified it. Oh, and new screenshots and comparisons for Episodes 3 to 6 will be coming soon as well :)
Hey there! These comparison shots are fantastic. I’ve heard a lot about the making of this, and it’s actually not just a remake, though they’re trying hard not to make that sound like a sequel either, hence ‘Rebuild’.
The changes that are beyond cosmetic are likely very intentional, given the chalk-outline opening scene. Making the water red in pretty much all scenes, for example, and moving Lilith’s mask from her to the Seele monoliths. Also strange things I don’t get, like the track number and time change of Shinji’s music player. Only the seconds remain the same number. When everything is so faithfully re-rendered, a change like this is suspicious.
While I don’t know because I haven’t seen the rest, could this be the result of Shinji’s wish…? A chance to try again? It’s my speculations :p
Thanks for the compliments, Chris! Actually I’m not done with the comparison yet (I’m stuck around episode 3 or something), I couldn’t find the time to crop the screenshots and composite them into images and then upload them.
Many people got this impression that Gainax is just treating the Evangelion series as an awesome cash cow, since the Rebuild, with largely similar storyline for the first installment of the 4-film series (as compared to the original anime), had earned them considerable amount of money.
Cosmetic changes aside, there are indeed several aspects of the new storyline that might signify a change in how things turn out for the next few films – like how they’ve axed a few angels out of the series, the puzzling change of Lilith’s face, the change in the SEELE and NERV logos and etc. Indeed, it’s suspicious when the animators took great pain to faithfully recreate many of the insignificant minute details (like the passengers on the train, the clutter on Misato’s apartment).
I can’t help but speculate too!
[...] par vous même si vous allez voir quelques uns des centaines de montages comparatifs réalisés par un blogueur, sur teddy-o-ted.com (prenez note qu’il y en a sur 6 pages…). Donc même si la grande majorité des scènes [...]
Great side-by-side comparison- but this could have done with some discussion of vitally important scenes in the original that *weren’t* in Rebuild, perhaps most interestingly the failure of EVA-01 to reach out by itself and deflect the falling beams from hitting Shinji.
Thanks for the compliments! My review is more on the aesthetic and visual aspect of the remake, and less on the technicalities. I’m not an Eva expert too so I guess it shouldn’t weigh on the storyline changes, but I’m excited to see how the next few films play out differently from the animated series :)
This was a pretty awesome series it reminded me of Gundam Wing. I miss old shows like this on toonami and adult swim.
Just the type of iinhsgt we need to fire up the debate.
